How to request copies:

All readers who usually receive the Arabic edition (NHQ) of FMR will receive a copy of the supplement in Arabic with their copy of NHQ 31 in January. You therefore do not need to request it UNLESS you would like to receive multiple copies for training purposes and/or onward distribution.

The English version of the supplement will NOT be mailed out to regular readers of FMR. You need to email us to request copies. We are keen to distribute copies to organisations which would find it useful for training and awareness-raising purposes. We would also be happy to send it to libraries and resource centres.

Summer Break

FMR Burma issue now online

The latest issue of Forced Migration Review (FMR 30) with its feature
section on ‘Burma’s displaced people’ is now online at
www.fmreview.org/burma.htm

With the ‘Saffron revolution’ of September 2007, Burma was catapulted
into the centre of international attention. It was briefly headline news
as people monitored the regime’s response and watched for hints of
progress towards democracy and the restoration of rights. With little
action on either front (and no visible resurgence of violence or
protest), interest has since waned. This issue of FMR aims to help bring
the crisis of forced displacement of Burmese people back into the
international spotlight.

The feature section on Burma includes 29 articles exploring the extent
of the displacement crisis, factors affecting displaced people and the
search for solutions. The issue also includes 19 articles on other
aspects of forced migration.

We would like to thank Inge Brees, guest editor for the Burma feature
section, and those agencies that have provided funding specifically for
this issue: DanChurchAid, DFAIT Canada, International Rescue Committee,
UK Department for International Development and ZOA Refugee Care.

This issue will be published in Burmese as well as our usual four
languages: English, Arabic, French and Spanish.

This issue will be distributed to our usual mailing list shortly. If you
usually receive FMR, you do not need to contact us unless you require
multiple copies.

News from the Forced Migration Review journal is that the latest issue of the journal, Number 30, will be published later this month on the subject of Burma. The journal will include a number of articles relating to Burma and will examine "the causes and patterns of displacement; the experiences, needs and coping strategies of Burmese refugees and IDPs; the challenges in providing protection and assistance; and the search for durable solutions."

This also acts as a good opportunity to remind everyone that whilst the Refugee Archives here at UEL hold a current hard copy subscription to Forced Migration review, the journal is also freely available as a full-text online journal via the Forced Migration Review web site at: http://www.fmreview.org/

"Refugee Voices" is a quarterly newsletter, prepared within hCa's Refugee Advocacy and Support Program. The winter edition of the newsletter, published in December 2007 includes articles about a wedding story of a young Somalian couple from Istanbul, organisation efforts of Congolese people in Istanbul and suspicious death of Festus Okey from Nigeria. Nepal: Peace Postponed, the latest briefing from the International Crisis Group, examines the faltering but still viable process. A year after a Comprehensive Peace Agreement promised a definitive end to its civil war, the country remains in political deadlock. Two election postponements reflect weak implementation of that deal, as well as the difficulty of addressing its shortcomings. Leaders have vowed to forge a new consensus and hold the elections by mid-April 2008 but have yet to address the problems that led to past delays or tackle crucial remaining issues such as security sector reform. Migration Research

To mark the journal’s 20th anniversary and the 25th anniversary
of the founding of the Refugee Studies Centre, this issue brings
together contributions from noted scholars about the approaches
we adopt, the research frames and tools we use, and the role we
have as researchers. Its aim is to provide an overview of debates
in the field, to revisit key terms, to conceptualize the
particularities of refugee research as an interdisciplinary field
of study, and to identify emerging trends.

Serbian Refugee Council (SRC) has the pleasure to present to you the fourth issue of our quarterly Newsletter. The focus of this issue is the work of the Documentation and Research Centre of the SRC (D&R SRC) and SRC assessment of the need and relevance for the research and studying of the forced migration phenomena in Serbia.

In the first text we have presented the information about daily activities of the D&R SRC and the short report on the SRC research exercises conducted in 2006. The second article is the analysis about necessity of the establishment of academic interdisciplinary forced migration study programmes in Serbia. In the third text, our collaborator Mila Dragojevic, a PhD candidate at Brown University (Providence, USA), investigates the relevance of the forced migration research in social sciences.

This issue of the Newsletter gives an overview of the SRC activities in the past four months and introduces activities to be implemented within the project “People in Readmission”, which is financed by the European Commission.

SRC would like to invite you, our readers, to kindly contribute with suggestions and comments so we can continue to make the Newsletter truly interesting and useful for all those who are dealing with issues of forced migration.
